Photography Tips: Old Fashion Cherry Coke

I took my three daughters to a local ice cream parlor. It has an old fashion theme with the large chalk board on the wall with all the items handwritten in different colors, old fashion bars stools, and small town manners. Very nice place to take your kids for a scoop of overly delicious fattening ice cream! A scoop of pralines and cream please…

However, this day I resisted the creamy treat of artery clogging and ordered an “Old Fashion Cherry Coke” for $3.

This is when it got weird…

He took out a styrofoam cup, squirked a splash of cherry, and then pulled out a two liter of coke out of a tiny refrigerator and poured it. Put on a lid and handed it to me.

It was not the cherry coke I wanted as much I wanted to watch him mix the cherry extract, pull the level and pour out some Coca-Cola in tall skinny, nearly sexxy, glass.

I truly felt cheated. It made a huge impression on me. It was AT THAT MOMENT, I realized I was buying the experience – not the drink! Especially at $3. I was wanting to reminisce  how to my dad might have ordered a cherry coke when he was a little boy.

MOST people WILL pay handsomely for an experience and if they don’t get it are extremely dissapointed. Sure I got the Cherry Coke, but it was NOT the Cherry Coke I was seeking!

You CAN charge more for the experience BUT you must deliver it.

Great real life example  to illustrate what we need to do  to be successful in today’s economy (financial as well as number of unqualified photographers we compete with).
