Photography Tips: Gordan Ramsey: Kitchen Nightmares = Photographers Dream??

If you can handle all the “F” words, its an amazing show to watch!

You get to see a REAL business in trouble! Learn from their nightmares.

His last comment in tonight’s episode I watched was “Business doesn’t just come and sit in your lap. You gotta go looking for it and if you don’t, your gonna fail.”

Each episode tends to center around delivering a quality product, listening to your customers, delighting your customers, simplifying the menu, and know the numbers.

I’m watching another episode as I type this.

Here are some lessons this show:

  • Be in the dining room charming your clients, let specialists do what you hired them to do, you can’t do it ALL yourself.
  • You can charge top notch prices but only if you deliver a top notch experience and product. Attention to details.
  • Don’t accept average.
  • If its not perfect, it doesn’t leave the kitchen.
  • Take pride in your work.
  • Stop being a cook, be a chef (Think how that applies to photography!).
  • If your customers won’t pay your top prices, cut them and if you don’t, they will eat elsewhere (You CAN over price yourself).
  • Your work should say “This is ME.”
  • Selfish people don’t make good head chefs.
  • You are happier when you take pride in your great work.
  • Have more energy when working. Its contagious.
  • Know when your work is good enough to leave the kitchen.
  • Ambiance is important to clients experience. Fresh paint can do a long ways.
  • Fight for your reputation by delivering quality worthy of that reputation.
  • Friends of your clients can be a huge key to your future success. Your clients must be so delighted, they tell their friends.
  • Celebrate your successes. Have a party with your clients.

Simple!

George

PS. Have you set your DVR to record it yet??

  1. This is too funny that you posted this, as I just set my DVR to begin taping all the previous seasons episodes yesterday. Just started watching this a couple of weeks ago, and I agree that it’s a terriffic show to study for business (another good one for the same reason is Tabitha’s Salon Makeover, which had its first season last year — I think from the Style network).
Not to mention, Gordon Ramsey’s simple, fresh, healthy dishes make my mouth water in every episode! I’ll have to go hunt down some of his books!
